George Kirkham

1852 - 1923

PIONEER • CARPENTER • ENTERTAINER • SINGER • MISSIONARY •  PRISONER • HEALER • TEMPLE BUILDER • ARTIST • FATHER OF 21 CHILDREN • HUSBAND TO TWO SISTERS

George Kirkham was unique among American settlers.  He born an Englishman and died an American.  He saw the taming of the old west.  He crossed the plains on foot as a child. His family converted to the Mormon faith and he embraced his new religion with all his heart.  He is unique not only because of what he accomplished in his life but also because he kept a daily record of that life before the days of word processors and facebook posts.  The pages of his diary were handwritten in pencil by candlelight.  Had he been alive today he would likely have been a Youtube star with  a large  following on Twitter.  He was an expert with the 'magic lantern' and gave concerts and entertained all over the Intermountain West.  If you would like to meet George, you can ... by reading his words.  George will talk to you, through the pages of his journal.
